Advantages of ceramic materials

          In comparison to plastics, ceramic material is the obvious choice for use in extreme conditions; severe changes  in temperature or pressure, corrosion, particularly if these conditions present themselves at the same time or over a prolonged period of time.

The general properties of ceramic material present the following Advantages and Disadvantages:

Advantages:

1. Harder than conventional metals, they possesses extreme hardness.
2. Low coefficient of friction.
3. Extremely high melting point.
4. Corrosion resistance(atmospheric), chemical attack resistance (gas and liquids).
5. Low density.
6. Better economy.
7. Easily available.
8. Glazed ceramic does not stain.
9. Excellent electrical insulation and offer excellent dielectric properties.
10. Relatively lightweight.
11. Good sanitation.

Disadvantages:

1. Dimensional tolerances difficult to control during processing.
2. Weak in tension.
3. Poor shock resistance.
4. Can crack when hit with heavy items.
