In comparison to plastics, ceramic material is the obvious choice for use in extreme conditions; severe changes in temperature or pressure, corrosion, particularly if these conditions present themselves at the same time or over a prolonged period of time.
The general properties of ceramic material present the following Advantages and Disadvantages:
Advantages:
- Harder than conventional metals, they possesses extreme hardness.
- Low coefficient of friction.
- Extremely high melting point.
- Corrosion resistance(atmospheric), chemical attack resistance (gas and liquids).
- Low density.
- Better economy.
- Easily available.
- Glazed ceramic does not stain.
- Excellent electrical insulation and offer excellent dielectric properties.
- Relatively lightweight.
- Good sanitation.
Disadvantages:
- Dimensional tolerances difficult to control during processing.
- Weak in tension.
- Poor shock resistance.
- Can crack when hit with heavy items.
